Data collection plays an important role in coaching, instruction, and professional learning. Data collection allows for benchmarks to be identified, goals to be established, and for analysis to drive decisions. Coaches can model the practice of data-driven decision-making for educators in the professional development they design and implement. This modeling can help educators to see the various ways they can use qualitative and quantitative data to inform their instruction and improve student learning. Data-driven decision-making also creates opportunities for coaches to support teachers in collaborating with students over learning goals. By collaborating with students and in this way, educators invite students into the conversation as stakeholders and help them to see that their voices are valued in the decision-making process.
