This indicator highlights one of my greatest passions as a coach, partnering with educators to empower students in their learning. One of the ways students can become empowered in their learning is by supporting them in understanding and practicing how to set goals and measure their progress. In the blog post, Empowering Learners Through the Use of Digital Badges, I discuss how educators can utilize digital badges in their classrooms to foster student autonomy in goal-setting and measurement of progress towards learning goals. Digital badges provide students with the opportunity to feel empowered in the learning process. Students are provided with voice and choice in selecting the progression of learning goals and in deciding the evidence-based artifacts they will submit to show mastery of essential skills. This past year of remote and hybrid learning has shown a spotlight on the necessity for student empowerment and engagement. As a digital education leader, I am continuously reflecting on how I can best support educators in this indicator. When students are seen as stakeholders in their learning and they are provided with opportunities for ownership in the learning process, students are able to build essential critical thinking and self-evaluative skills. Digital badges provide an innovative solution for coaches and educators, as they look to explore solutions for strengthening student autonomy and empowering learners to assume an active role in goal-setting. Coaches must support educators in continuing to explore opportunities to empower their students to use the learning data collected. Learning data can be an incredibly powerful tool to set goals and measure progress when used with purposeful intention. It is essential that coaches and educators partner to create learning opportunities where students can develop these skills.
